15 Rules of Good Finance: Some simple advice to help with credit and spending.

1. Don't spend money you don't have. Sounds simple but oh so true.

2. If you need to borrow, remember, you must return what you’ve borrowed. Sharing may be caring but unfortunately you still have to pay it back.

3. Pay at least the minimum due on time so you don’t waste money on late fees.

4. Don't use too many credit cards. You may have heard that more credit cards are a good thing, but it’s urban legend.

5. Use banking alerts (now text, phone and email available) to keep tabs on all your accounts.

6. Pay attention to your banking statements so you know where all of your money is going.

7. Control your debt before it grows. Try to pay off debts with the highest interest rate first.

8. Remember, while debt is something to avoid wherever possible, building your credit history is a GOOD thing. It will help if you need to take out school loans, get a car lease, rent an apartment, or buy a home.

9. Choose a card that fits your needs. Be picky. You’re worth it.

10. Read all of the fine print with any and all cards.

11. Sign the back of your card.

12. Keep your mailing address current. Hiding from bills doesn’t get rid of them.

13. Avoid identity theft. Use secure websites. Make sure all charges on your billing statement are yours. For more on how to protect yourself, visit the Chase Security Center online.

14. Open a savings account and put money (even a little bit) in it every month. This money can help cushion the blow of an emergency.

15. Keep a budget. Print this worksheet or save it and fill it out later.
